“Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.”
-Psalms 105:1-2 NLT
In a culture where so many of our basic needs are met and we do not need to rely on God for our next meal or somewhere to lay our heads at night, it’s easy to go about daily life without noticing God at work.
I’ve been challenged recently by our vicar who gave a sermon on testimonies and how there has been a slight lack in people sharing how God has been answering prayers. Is that because God hasn’t been working? Of course not. I wonder if it’s simply because we do not have a culture of sharing when God has done something and answered our prayers.
The Jews in the ancient world had a very good culture of sharing stories of how had God provided for his people and cared for them. They had a good practice of remembering and passing these stories down through generations. This Psalm is but one example of just that. King David goes on to list a whole host of ‘wonderful deeds’ God has done for his people.
We could learn a lot from these people and while it may seem, with all the horrendous stuff going on in the world, that there’s not a lot to tell about. But the fact is there are so many wonderful deeds to share. We just have to have our eyes open to see them.
Testimonies provide such encouragement, not only to the individual it’s happened to, but also to fellow believers of Jesus Christ. They encourage us in our faith and demonstrate that God really is at work in our life. What I have come to realise in the last few weeks is that God can be working in small ways; the answers to our prayers may not be major or completely life-changing. For example, the other week my eldest son was on some monkey bars and he kept getting so far before falling off. I told him he could have one last go before we were leaving and I said a little prayer. ‘Jesus, please help Toby to make it all the way across.’ Guess what happened next? Toby made it all the way across, from one end to the next. Could I have seen that as a coincidence? Absolutely. Did I choose to see it as God answering my prayer? You bet I did. I felt so encouraged!
This example is small and in some ways a silly one but it goes to show, God cares.
May I encourage you to look out for God at work and then to share what He is doing.
