For quite some time I have wanted to capture the sunset at Mwnt. Mwnt is a gorgeous little place on the coast near Cardigan, West Wales. There is not much there except a 13th century church, a beach, and a caravan site. Oh and a field of cows. But oh my, is it a beautiful place. So when the forecast was looking good and it coincided with a visit to my father-in-law, I just knew I had to go. With my husband and son in tow, I took a little detour to Mwnt before arriving at my father-in-laws. I was not disappointed. It wasn’t long before the sun was going to set and the sky had started to turn the most glorious shade of orange and the sun was perfectly round in a perfectly cloudless sky.

One unique feature of Mwnt is the large mound of cliff (not sure that quite makes sense but there we go!) that overlooks Cardigan Island to the one side and the rest of Cardigan Bay to the other. With not a whole lot of time before the sun was going to set I headed up the mound at quite some speed – it was quite possible the most vigorous exercise I have done since giving birth 4 months ago! As the sun hid behind the mound out of view I had a small panic that my choice of spot to photograph the sunset was not the best but I carried on powering up to the top. As I neared the top of the cliff, I caught a glimpse of the view behind me and my legs turned to jelly. ‘Don’t look back, don’t look back’ I had to tell myself. It was a loooooooong way down and I don’t have the best balance at the best of times! I focused on facing forwards and getting to the top. A few minutes later I had made it and the view did not disappoint.
With jelly legs, I stood, (may I add that the top of the cliff is a ridge – it is not flat at all) and pointed my camera at the sun. The perfectly round burnt orange sun in a perfectly cloudless blue sky. I found a spot to sit – my legs were too wobbly to stand up – and capture the sunset. It was one of those sunsets where the sun sets right into the sea, no clouds to get in the way just the sun sinking into the horizon. Woohoo – sunset captured!

Next mission? Make it back down the cliff to my husband and son who were waiting in the car park. Now, I am yet to mention that I probably, (most definitely) was not wearing the most appropriate footwear to go climbing, unless you count Birkenstock sandals as appropriate climbing footwear! I was convinced I was going to slip and fall flat on my bum. As I’ve already mentioned, I do not have the best balance so rather than take the risk, I did the really steep bits on my bottom! Anyway, I made it to the bottom of the cliff without falling (yay!) and my heart happy as it always is after I’ve been by the sea with my camera.
