The Time of the Odd One Out

Last Saturday I completed my first ‘new place a month’ challenge with a visit to some of the waterfalls in Brecon. Ever since September, a couple of friends and I have been trying to plan a photography trip together and on Saturday we managed it. It only took 4 months! We enjoyed a scenic route through the Welsh snow-tipped valleys with endless chatter and ended up at our destination in Pontneddfechan. In typical Welsh fashion, it was raining. On went the hiking boots, the extra pair of socks and up went the hoods.

Being too cautious to get my camera out (or sensible seeing as it was raining) I enjoyed taking in the beautiful scenery through the lens of my own human eye and being the subject of my friends’ photos. Thankfully the rain lightened and I decided to get my camera out. Of course I got straight on the ground at began shooting the muddy path in front of me – I do love this perspective.

One thing I have discovered that I love this winter has been seeing the details in the trees’ naked branches and there’s always those leaves that just want to hang on. There is beauty even in the bleakest of months. How beautiful are these colours?

Now where are those waterfalls? A fair distance has to be walked to reach the first of the waterfalls but it is definitely worth it. Can’t you tell? Just look at that face.

To reach the rest of waterfalls, you have to walk an even further distance and this time it’s uphill. But, it’s great exercise and that best form of exercise I think – when it’s happening but its unintentional and scenic – bonus! These are some of the little waterfalls we saw along the way.

A moment of worry strikes when you have a friend who has gone crazy and decides to wade through the river right at the top of the waterfall – with her camera in hand – to capture the waterfall from the top. Thankfully she made it back to dry land safely.

We made it to the end of the end of the path and found snow! Someone had even made a tiny snowman on the picnic table. Upon realising their hair colour is identical, I just had to capture my two red-headed friends. At which point it was pointed out that I was the odd one out with my brown hair. However, my friends were also odd ones out in their own ways with one owning a different camera brand to two of us and the other being a whole different nationality. So we’re all odd.

What walk is complete without a drink in the pub before heading home? Of course this happened.

I look forward to what adventures the next new place has in store.
